Unusual high frequency EMIC waves: Detailed analysis of EMIC wave excitation and energy coupling between EMIC and magnetosonic waves

چکیده

A recent event study suggested a coupling process whereby suprathermal protons (10–100 eV), as result of perpendicular heating by pre-existing magnetosonic waves, can excite electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves with frequency near the local proton (f~0.95fcp). The present tests this process. First, one-dimensional hybrid (kinetic ions/massless fluid electrons) simulations parallel-propagating EMIC initialized plasma conditions derived from prove that high be generated anisotropic instead more energetic (10s keV) ring current protons. Calculation quasilinear pitch-angle diffusion coefficient for electrons using simulated suggests these outside plasmasphere play role in scattering ~MeV due to large wavenumber excited waves. Second, is examined theory and simple test particle calculation. It found becomes ineffective energies relevant protons, indicating low-energy (<10 eV) cannot efficiently energized observed level through multi-harmonic resonances observed. Rather, some kind non-resonant may have been at play, if were actually involved heating. This quantitative understanding energy needed.

Four Years of the EMIC Program *

Four years ago Congress made the first appropriation for "medical, nursing, and hospital maternity and infant care for wives and infants of enlisted men in the armed forces of the United States of the fourth, fifth, sixth, or seventh grades." The following month, April 1943, plans for the operation of the Emergency Maternity and Infant Care (EMIC) program were approved by the Children's Bureau ...

Statistical analysis of relativistic electron energies for cyclotron resonance with EMIC waves observed on CRRES

[1] Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves which propagate at frequencies below the proton gyrofrequency can undergo cyclotron resonant interactions with relativistic electrons in the outer radiation belt and cause pitch-angle scattering and electron loss to the atmosphere. Typical storm-time wave amplitudes of 1–10 nT cause strong diffusion scattering which may lead to significant relativi...

Healing Performances: Ethnographic Concepts and Emic Perspectives

This paper looks at healing performances as ethnographic expressions of local knowledge and culture embedded within the Malay psyche and gemeinschaft. As society develops and progresses, these healing performances are caught within conflicting trajectories which become compounded by the contestations of tradition, religious concerns, locality and modernity. As exemplifications of the Malay etho...

Aspects of emic and etic measurement: lessons from Mary Poppins.

This article describes emic and etic approaches to measurement in terms of a process of associating indicators and constructs. In this process, it is important to establish evidence of an adequate range of indicators and a relevant association of indicators and constructs and to recognize that such evidence places bounds on the interpretation of measurement outcomes. A passage from one of P. L....

Striated drifting auroral kilometric radiation bursts: Possible stimulation by upward traveling EMIC waves

[1] We investigate waves observed by the Cluster wideband instrument (WBD) during an orbital conjunction with the Polar spacecraft. During this perigee pass, Polar was at the upper extent of the auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) source region in the Southern Hemisphere nightside auroral region. Cluster was located at higher altitude above this region and observed AKR with clear signatures of o...
